Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
