Astronaut Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also comprised experts in various fields.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
